Only about 20 hours into that server, but the changes they have made to the game have been very positive. We had another one, and we had made some significant progress on it, but we stopped playing for a couple of years, and attempts to update the old instance ended up with hopelessly corrupt server files. In another instance, which we have been playing on since 2016, we have a pack of dire wolves that my daughter has bred from 8 tamed beasties where she has written down their lineage in a notebook.Ī Dark and Light server that I recently spun up. My son and daughter coined the term 'murder parrot' because they sometimes sport very festive-colored plumage, and the devs have seen fit to allow you to carry one on your shoulder like a pirate, and because they look like a cross between a parrot and a cayman. My daughter loves breeding animals in Ark, and just last weekend we saw a truly rare event, where one dimorphodon (aka 'murder parrot') egg hatched triplet dimorphodons. That way, eggs don't hatch and mama animals don't give birth while we are not playing. We play this together, turning on and off the instances when we are done. Currently, we have:Īn Ark server with 6 available map instances. We form up a tribe/team/group on a private server that sits within my home firewall, invitation only. I play survival games with my family and one or two of my closest friends. maybe they'll decide like me that the entire point of a survival game is ultimately building up a permanent base. Sadly, I don't know of any current or imminent game that will really deliver what I want. It's a step in the right direction though. These were just locations with set pieces that I could move around. State of Decay 2 was a pretty fun game that had multiple bases that you could build up, but just like AC: Valhalla, these were not /my bases/. well, kinda sucked overall.Īn upcoming game I have hope for is State of Decay 3. I want to actually build my base.įallout 76 seemed like it could have really hit my sweet spot, but the game just. It's the game's base with some set pieces that I can shift in and out. I'm encouraged that in AC: Valhalla, they've incorporated a base that you grow over time and it is your hub. Basically, all items I get should just immediately get turned into components of some kind that I use to craft both my weapons, gear, but also, a base and a community. E.g, in Cyberpunk, I hate dealing with looting 100+ items every time I play, just to either scrap them or sell them. While I really like games like Cyberpunk and Assassin's Creed, I'm really wanting a AAA game of that caliber to really embrace the base building and crafting we see in survival games. I've also tried games like The Forest, and couldn't get into them either-because the point of the game is not ultimately about building an awesome base/community. But I played a fair amount when the game launched (maybe for a month or so), and it was so boring back then, that I'm having a hard time dedicating the time it takes to learn everything you can do in it now. You get to build a cool base, you get easy access to still explore and have your base (something Conan absolutely fails to facilitate), and it has elements of combat and danger. I may actually try to get back into No Man's Sky, as it apparently has turned into what is likely a great game for me. I tried playing Ark, and I think if I was a kid, I'd prefer it over Conan, but as an adult, I prefer Conan. It has it's own beauty, to be sure, but it does't match with me. I've tried Valhiem, but I just cannot get over the mine-craft-level graphics. So far, the best survival game I've found is Conan Exiles. Even a game like Dyson Sphere kind of seems to scratch the itch I have for survival games (even though there's no danger in it at all). I wonder, what even is a "survival" game to people? To me, it's crafting and base building in a dangerous world. The point of survival games for me is building up an awesome base in a dangerous world. It's far less about discovery, or combat or even dealing with "survival" elements like thirst and hunger. Then I realized what the entire point of survival games for me is. You're basically building little bases up as you go and moving around. It's describing a new survival game called Icarus, which sounds very promising, but at the end they describe how the game doesn't want you to build up a permanent base. Maybe it's the pandemic changing my thinking on things, but right now, I really like playing games where I go around collecting resources and building things from them. My favorite genre of game right now are survival games. Does Medicare provide coverage for purchasing a folding mobility scooter? Call for advice on shipping one back, I'll need the whole adze. I want you to be using and enjoying my tools and will help you do so all I can. An adze comes in here for repair about every 4 years don't be afraid to send yours in even if you feel you may have screwed up. Yes, I'll repair or remake your tool as long as it doesn't show signs of real abuse. If you do this you will be using the adze for years. Keep your tool sharp and don't pry with it (or with any of my tools!). If you don't find it easy to do this at least make sure you have good contact so the iron doesn't rock around and it fits tight front to back. What happens when I put a really tight wrap on the tools is the center pulls down slightly into the gap and so really holds it tight. You check this by holding the assembly up to the light. I actually fit it so it makes contact towards the front contact point with the wood and again in the back – the center I leave just a tiny gap. Fit up the iron if you are making from a kit: that means check the surface to make sure the iron sits flat to it. I cannot insure these tools against abuse. A note on my guarantee as regards the adze Fast accurate cuts are better than wild flailing with a heavier tool. For this reason, smaller people and those with less powerful wrists should stay with the baby adzes. An adze does not rebound like a hammer on a nail, so it is a mistake to buy too heavy an adze. They are especially good for flat accurate cuts. Many carvers use them almost exclusively mask makers consider them essential. Straight adzes are somewhat more traditional on the coast. If I was starting with one tool, I'd choose the Sitka Gutter adze. Gutter adzes are good for wasting wood with and across the grain. I do not recommend you buy a D-adze unless you know why you want it. Most of the advantage lies with the elbow adze. We sell two types of adze: the elbow adze and the D-adze. There are so many possibilities it can be confusing-it needn't be. Adze recommendations for the beginning carver Spools of twine are available on the 'Store' page. Sheaths can be purchased separately as well, and I strongly recommend getting a sheath for your adze iron. If you are ordering an iron only you may request a length of twine to go with it. All of the kits include haft, iron and heavy duty leather sheath and a length of nylon twine for the wrapping. My pre-shaping will get you to where you need to go much faster. It is natural for a person new to these tools to be somewhat conservative when shaping the haft – to make these tools really sweet there is a lot of wood that must be removed before the carver will end up with a tool with the right balance and correct functionality. This gives the carver something to go by when finishing the shape. I have added to the value of the adze kits by rough shaping the haft. Our adze haft blanks are Eastern Rock Maple. These materials cover adze use, sharpening and hafting your adze iron. Our Adzes, adze irons and kits all come with a 12 page booklet with 29 photographs and 3 pages of drawings which includes full size adze haft templates. It is a 3 1/2” wide gutter adze that is another option when you want faster wood removal with a light weight tool but don’t need the flatter face of the lip adzes. In this same size range of adzes, we also offer the Big Mama gutter adze. Both the 2 1/2″ and 3″ are real wood eaters for wood carvers. To handle the extra weight I have also added some to the power of the haft. This small amount makes a real difference in the tools balance. This adds an ounce to the weight of the heads making them decidedly more aggressive tools when heavier wood removal is called for. I am now making the "light lips" of 5/32" material. Our lip irons come with a thermal formed Kydex sheath, perfect protection for that long edge! Although I have beefed up iron and haft for these you will still need to keep the tool sharp and cut, but not pry your chips. Since I don't carve everyday and I often use the corners of the lip I like the 2 1/2″ best. These sophisticated tools have a slight radius to the cutting edge and the lips are angled out some to keep from "stuffing the chip." The 3” lip adze is a little flatter, and better for larger flatter faceting work while the 2 1/2” version is a better all around carver in my opinion. Most of my professional carving friends use a lip adze for even smaller mask-size carvings. Once you know where you are going, there is no sense mucking about in getting there. There is nothing like a lip adze for wasting large amounts of wood rapidly. Represent the figure that has a surface area So what's the total surface area? Well, 10 plus 10 plus 10 plusġ0 is 40 plus four plus four gets us to 48 square centimeters or centimeters squared. Now, these two sections right over here, they're two centimetersīy two centimeters, so they're each going toīe four square centimeters. So once again, that'sġ0 square centimeters. This is five long, five centimeters long, two centimeters wide. So these are each 10 squareĬentimeters, and so is this one. So what is the surfaceĪrea of this one here? And then of course we have the top that's connected right over here. When we fold this side in, that's the side that's kind We fold this side in, that's the same color. When you fold this side in, right over here, that could be that. Right over here, this side right over here along When we fold up that side, that could be this side If I want, five centimeters, and that's of course the sameĪs that dimension up there. This dimension right over here, I can put the double hash marks You're gonna have your base that has a length of five centimeters. Start with a net like this and try to visualize the polyhedron that it actually represents,Īnd it looks pretty clear that this is going toīe a rectangular prism, but let's actually draw it. Now, they don't ask us toĭo this in the problem, but it's always fun to Pretty much all the rest of the edges are going Has the same number of hash marks, in this case, one, is also going to be two centimeters. So that's five centimetersĪnd that's five centimeters. And then these two over hereĪre also five centimeters. Has this double hash mark right over here is also Other five-centimeter edges because any edge that So this is one of the five-centimeterĮdges right over here. When other kids would have panicked, he maintained his calm attitude and sense of humor. The Thompson firefighters are praising Samuel for keeping his cool through the whole ordeal. "Especially when he said that his right foot wasn't resting on the bottom, it was sucking, trying to pull him farther so we started to realize his left leg wasn't resting on maybe it was pavement, I’m not sure what it was resting on, his left leg wasn't resting so it could have been much worse and pulled farther,” Julie said. His family says it wasn't until emergency crews freed him that they realized how serious the situation could have been. In the end, the city had to call in a vacuum truck to get the boy unstuck.Īfter some time wrapped in blankets and heat packs, his temperature finally became normal again. Meanwhile, Samuel had started shivering uncontrollably. "I didn't really get worried through the whole thing, I just kind of told myself that it was going to be ok and I was going to get out,” Samuel said.Įmergency crews spent a half hour trying to pull him out, but they started getting stuck in the mud too. So, they called emergency services, who right away sent two ambulances and a fire truck. Samuel's dad wasn't able to pull him out either. "This lady arrived at our house and said that my son had given this address and that he was stuck in the mud and of course I had absolutely no idea what that meant,” said Julie Desjardins, Samuel’s mother. The boys managed to flag down a woman who ran to Samuel's house and told his parents what happened. Samuel's friend tried to help him out, but he started getting sucked in too. "My right leg went through, and it immediately went up to about half-way up my shin and then I kept gradually sinking from there,” Samuel said. He was on his way home with a friend when he stepped in what he thought was a puddle. This is how Samuel Desjardins spent his Saturday afternoon. He thought he was jumping into a puddle, but soon found himself stuck waist-deep in freezing muddy water. My leg came out with an audible pop as we broke the suction of the sand.Winnipeg, Manitoba - A 12-year old Canadian boy is recovering after a scary ordeal over the weekend. My buddy grabbed my hands and leaned his body back, and it took MUSCLE. "I couldn't get free, and the more I tried the deeper I went. "The quicksand I fell into wasn't so much sand as clay, holding my leg like a vice," she wrote. She instantly sank up to her knee and kept sinking. Helm said she had been hiking near Grand Falls, Arizona, when she tried to cross a riverbed and stepped onto some cracked mud. The BLM's warning this month was shared on Twitter by Rebecca Helm, assistant professor of biology at the University of North Carolina Asheville, who said that she once got caught in quicksand in Arizona and that it was "one of the scariest hiking moments of my life." While it may now be regarded as a bit of a movie trope, quicksand can pose a genuine threat in some areas. The sinister sand has often been depicted in films over the years, trapping unwitting explorers. Quicksand refers to a region of sand that acquires the character of a liquid, meaning that it loses its ability to support weight. "Nights are still cold in the canyons, but even during a warm day-wet sand can reduce body temperatures causing a serious exposure issue." The BLM also warned that quicksand can sap warmth from the body, posing another risk for anyone who falls into it. A Utah Bureau of Land Management photo shows a bureau official examining some quicksand. 2/29/2024 0 Comments Normal hip xray childWe want primary care providers to feel comfortable reaching out if imaging reveals concerns for hip dysplasia so we can help triage patients or even provide reassurance. It can be frustrating for parents to travel with a young child only to learn the findings are normal. Unfortunately, many of these studies are not interpreted by a radiologist with pediatric training, leading to an increased diagnosis of possible hip dysplasia when metrics fall within a normal range for the child’s age. A lot of older children end up getting radiographs as well, especially if there is a concern about their exam or gait when the child is older. The number of patients we get referred from across the region has increased significantly over the last few years, especially as high-quality infant hip ultrasound has become more difficult to access in many parts of the region. While this doesn’t cover all scenarios, it hopefully helps with common questions about if or when to refer. We recently created a new algorithm for infant hip dysplasia to walk providers through the process of evaluating, diagnosing and referring their patients from birth to 2 years old. Q: How are you helping PCPs know when to refer? I probably see about 10 to 15 new hip patients each week. I also see adolescents and young adults with hip dysplasia. While many of these screening studies are normal, I see the infants with abnormal exams and ultrasounds, as well as older children who were previously treated for hip dysplasia and need continued follow-up to confirm that their hips have developed appropriately. Our ultrasonographers perform around 5,000 screening infant hip ultrasounds annually across all the Seattle Children’s clinical sites. We are the highest-volume center for hip dysplasia in the Pacific Northwest. In addition to a screening ultrasound at 6 weeks, a single anterior-posterior (AP) pelvis radiograph at 6 months is also recommended. Q: Do breech babies need additional screening when they are older?īreech presentation is felt to be a particularly strong risk factor for hip dysplasia, even in the setting of a normal physical exam. For babies with any of the risk factors noted above or an inconclusive exam, an ultrasound at 6 weeks of age is the ideal time to screen. The most sensitive test for a hip dislocation is the Ortolani maneuver, an exam maneuver where a palpable “clunk” is appreciated as the hip reduces back into the socket in flexion and abduction. Q: How are babies screened for hip dysplasia?Īll babies are screened with clinical exams at multiple points, assessing for instability in the hips, asymmetric abduction and relative leg-length differences that could indicate that one hip is out of the socket. In general, preterm infants are at lower risk for hip dysplasia, but should still be screened if they meet the criteria at the corrected age. Females have a higher incidence of hip dysplasia than males, but sex is not considered a specific risk factor for screening purposes. Risk factors for hip dysplasia include breach position at any point after 32 weeks gestation, family history of hip dysplasia in parents or siblings and improper swaddling with the hips immobilized in extension and adduction (knees together). Q: How common is hip dysplasia, and what are the risk factors for infant hip dysplasia?Ībout 1 in 100 babies has signs of hip instability at birth, and hip dislocations are identified in approximately 1 in 1000 newborns. Blumberg is an orthopedic surgeon who works with patients from infancy through young adulthood treating all hip conditions. |
